Hi! My name is Anahita Kanga, and I’m honored to serve as this year’s Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Alpha Gam!
My role includes making sure Alpha Gam is an inclusive and welcoming space for all. I want to make sure every member feels incredibly respected, loved, and valued as a member of our community. Alpha Gam would not be what it is without the diversity of all its members, and I am so proud to be a part of celebrating and uplifting that diversity.
Historically, Greek life has not always been the most inclusive environment, so it is especially important now to intentionally promote diversity instead of allowing it to divide us. Because of this, I make an effort to listen to the entire chapter's ideas on how we can improve and grow. No chapter will ever be perfect, but I strive to keep promoting inclusivity, kindness, and ongoing education.
During my term so far, we have increased the number of casual DEI-related events that we have, such as dumpling-making for Lunar New Year, Hamantaschen making (a yummy Jewish triangular filled-pocket pastry) to celebrate Purim, and cultural movie nights! In addition, we’ve started an initiative called S’more you Know, where we have discussions on various important topics, all while eating s’mores! My committee and I also give short educational presentations on holidays and other important events at chapter; so far, we’ve done Lunar New Year, Ramadan, Black History Month, and Disability Awareness programming. Additionally, we have also been growing our relationships with other organizations on campus, which has been a meaningful way to branch out, build new connections, and continue learning from the communities around us.
When choosing to join a sorority, one of the most important factors for me was finding a place where diversity of backgrounds and experiences was celebrated and valued. I am so grateful to work every day to make our chapter a place where sisters feel safe sharing their experiences and growing alongside one another. I’m so proud of the work we’ve done so far and am excited to work even harder to make sure our chapter is the best place it can be!
With love,
Anahita
Our chapter is intentional with the efforts we make to not only provide a safe and welcoming environment for our members, but to educate ourselves on a day-to-day basis. Our activities include:
◦ Frequent educational chapter programming relevant to current holidays and/or events
◦ Mixers with various cultural organizations and Greek chapters on campus
◦ Holiday celebrations for events such as Lunar New Year, Purim, Diwali, and more!
◦ Movie nights: cultural (Bollywood/K-dramas) & relevant to the month (Black History Month/Women’s History Month)
◦ Workshops and discussion-style events
◦ Involvement on campus with groups of AGDs going to cultural & diversity events together!
◦ The opportunity to host exchange students at our house for dinner and mingling! We welcomed Tokyo Tech students to our home, this March!
